　　美丽大学生瑞登·梅比（阿里克西丝·布莱德尔 Alexis Bledel 饰）即将迎来毕业的那一天，她乐观向上，学业优秀，从小就对人生作出理性而系统的规划。毕业后她决定进入当地最棒的出版社哈伯曼&布朗宁，再于几年后发表一部个人小说。憧憬固然美好，但现实却无比残酷。瑞登的大学同学，同时也是她学业上最强劲的竞争对手杰西卡?巴登（凯瑟琳·雷特曼 Catherine Reitman 饰）成功得到那家出版社的工作，失意的瑞登只好返回家乡。即使降低了标准，求职之路也充满艰辛。与此同时，瑞登多少有些脱线也让她烦恼不已。在这一过程中，青梅竹马的好友亚当（扎克·吉尔福德 Zach Gilford 饰）始终陪在她的身边，而瑞登似乎又对帮助过自己的邻居有了别样的情感……
