　　故事发生在二十世纪五十年代的美国，巴迪（迈克尔·瑞斯玻利 Michael Rispoli 饰）买了一间房子作为新家，然而，当他喜滋滋地想要搬进去时，却发现原来租住在里面的夫妻玛丽（凯莉·麦克唐纳 Kelly Macdonald 饰）和吉姆（凯文·康韦 Kevin Conway 饰）夫妻两人不愿意搬走，并且，怀孕的玛丽即将生产。
　　让大家没有想到的是，玛丽生出来的宝宝竟然是黑皮肤，愤怒的吉姆离她而去。善良的巴迪可怜母子两人孤苦伶仃，帮他们租了一个房间，并且不时地去探望和照顾他们。随着时间的推移，巴迪和玛丽之间的关系开始变得亲密起来，这让巴迪的妻子埃斯特拉（凯瑟琳·纳杜奇 Kathrine Narducci）感到十分不满。
