　　第二次世界大战期间，英国上流社会的苏珊·特拉赫在参加反㊟㊟的地下活动时遇到了空降军人拉扎尔，并同他发生了㊟㊟。这浪漫的一夜被苏珊珍藏在心底。二战胜利后，苏珊嫁给了外交官雷蒙德·布洛克。算然生活富裕，但苏珊总被一种幻灭肝笼罩着。1956年，苏珊因苏伊士运河危机事件而在众目睽睽之下嘲弄丈夫上级——大使伦纳德·达尔文爵士，导致雷蒙德被降职调离。弄清了雷蒙德降职的真正原因，苏珊遂以㊟㊟相威胁达尔文爵士，以此让丈夫官复原职。雷蒙德得知这情况，同苏珊发生争执。苏珊认为导致二人产生分歧的罪魁祸首正是这富裕的生活。不久，苏珊与拉扎尔在一个海滨旅馆再次相遇，可悲的是，二人竟无法沟通，拉扎尔再次离去。苏珊想起了过去，在战胜胜利的那一天，一切似乎都无比美好，一个光辉灿烂的未来即将在英国展开，那是她最幸福的日子。
