　　暑假到了，10岁的威拉德·扬（伊利亚·伍德饰）被妈妈送到一个叫天堂的沿海小镇。他将在他母亲最好的朋友莉莉·里德家里度过暑假。到来的第一天，威拉德遇到了里德邻居家9岁的小女孩比莉·派克（索拉·波奇饰）。尽管比莉是个喜欢惹是生非的假小子，与威拉德乖巧听话的性格大相径庭，但是他们还是成为了好朋友。他们一起划船、游泳、观察小动物，还溜进仓房偷窥比莉的姐姐和她男朋友亲热。在里德家，威拉德很快发现，莉莉与她丈夫本·里德的关系似乎有很大问题——两人几乎没有什么沟通，也难见笑颜。一个偶然的机会，威拉德知道了两人关系出现问题的原因，于是努力帮助两人从悲剧中走出来。威拉德是一个聪明、讨人喜欢的孩子，很快便分别赢得了莉莉和本的喜爱。接下来他会在适当的时机，勾起二人对往昔美好日子的回忆。然而，威拉德也有着自己解不开的心结——他的爸爸已经很久没有回家了。他妈妈告诉他说，爸爸一直在执行海上任务所以不能回家，但威拉德听到谣言说他爸爸扔下他和妈妈与别的女人跑了。威拉德不愿意相信这是真的，也不敢去面对这样的事实......在这个静谧小镇的夏天，威拉德能否帮助里德夫妇走出阴霾，又能否解开自己的心结呢？
