　　1901年，一个小偷（梅尔·吉布森饰）犯下了谋杀罪，正等待处决。典狱长的妻子（黛安·基顿饰）决定替上帝拯救他的灵魂。她为他读《圣经》，希望他被绞死后，灵魂能够升上天堂，而不是堕入地狱。他们相互吸引。她帮他策划越狱，然后与他会合。在逃跑途中，他们做了爱，但仅此一次。当局的搜捕逼近时，她意识到他只有死路一条了，于是决定和他一起去死。“开枪打死我吧，”她恳求他，“我决不想比你多活一天。”他扣动扳机，但只是打伤了她。在结局处，她被判终身监禁，但她带着自豪走进自己的监房，一口痰吐向监狱看守的眼睛。
