　　从小被猩猩养大的乔治（布兰登·费舍 Brendan Fraser饰）一直生活在茂密的丛林中，逐渐成了森林之王。白人少女乌苏拉（莱斯利·曼恩 Leslie Mann饰）与未婚夫莱尔（托马斯·哈登·丘奇 Thomas Haden Church饰）来到非洲丛林中探险。然而两人突然遭遇狮子的袭击，危急时刻，自私的男友居然扔下乌苏拉独自逃生。幸好乔治及时将她救下，将她带到丛林的树屋中。在这里，两人度过了一段美好奇妙的丛林时光，单纯善良的乔治也赢得了乌苏拉的芳心。然而死心不改的莱尔竟开枪射伤了乔治，甚至偕同几个盗猎者要抓乔治的猩猩朋友去卖钱。
由迪斯尼公司于1997年推出的卖座喜剧电影《森林泰山》，根据美国六、七十年代同名电视卡通系列片改编而成。真人版的《森林泰山》，风格节奏及人物塑造依旧保持着原卡通片的幽默夸张，巧妙地保留了动画风格。本片在当年的全球票房收入高达一亿七千万美元，同时也捧红了“森林之王”布兰登·费舍，使他一跃跻身为好莱坞当红小生的行列。
