　　道格（西恩·威廉·斯科特 Seann William Scott 饰）是一个30岁的男人，年龄的增长让压在他肩头的负担越来越重，妻子想要住进大房子的渴望也成为了他辛勤工作的动力。对于自己经理助理的职位，道格很不满意，而就在他企图改变的时候，机会来了。经理打算再开一间连锁超市，而一直矜矜业业的道格则成为了超市经理的不二人选，然而，就在这个节骨眼上，一个名叫理查德（约翰·C·赖利 John C. Reilly 饰）的男人的出现却打破了道格的美梦。
　　作为竞争对手，道格和理查德之间的关系十分紧张。前者希望能够实现妻子的愿望，而后者则指望着靠获得经理的职位挽回对自己心灰意冷的妻子。面对自己的理想，两个男人都发誓绝不退却，一场激烈的争斗在表面平和的气氛下暗暗的展开了。
